I find this incredibly frustrating, as I grew up on a diet of children’s cartoons. I grew up watching Invader Zim, Ren & Stimpy, and SpongeBob. I’ve also read comics with adult content and found these cartoons particularly offensive.

Nickelodeon’s new take on Rocko’s Modern Life comes when a Nickelodeon cartoon series has grown more cult status. Despite its dated nature, Rocko’s Modern Life continues to have a cult following among adults, as shown by the recent release of “Static Cling,” directed by Joe Murray.
Another example of the show’s subtlety comes in references to historical figures. Despite its cartoon nature, many of the sex jokes made in Rocko’s Modern Life are morbid and adult. One example is Rocko’s work at a sex hotline. Heffer enjoys milking cows. Nickelodeon changed the character’s name to “Chewy Chicken.” A scene featuring Rocko visiting a motel with hourly rates was also excised from reruns.
Similarly, Rocko’s romantic game show is full of slapstick, over-the-top animation, and hidden messages. One episode even features a woman who appears as a silhouette. He runs towards her. While running toward her, he is caught in a thought bubble – a jackhammer hitting the ground. Throughout the film, Rocko lusts for Melba, a beautiful female protagonist.
Laughing at yourself is never lovely. But if you’re a teacher, you can try working a little humor into your lessons. Kids love talking about popular TV shows like American Idol or Jersey Shore. If they get off-topic, act as though you’re surprised and say something like, “I’m not sure what they mean, but you’re being funny!”
