Caterpillar Fingerplays

We hope you enjoy these caterpillar fingerplays.  These are great for teaching young children about the changing of a caterpillar into a butterfly.  These fingerplays are a great enhancement to their learning.  Can be used in a homeschool setting, a preschool setting, one-on-one or as a group.  Family daycares also enjoy doing these activities with the children in their care.

Sleepy Caterpillars

Let's go to sleep the little caterpillars said.

(Bend ten fingers into palms.)

As they tucked themselves into their beds.

They will awaken by and by,

(Slowly unfold and hold up fingers.)

And each one will be a lovely butterfly.

(Hands make flying motion.)

Caterpillar

Roly-poly caterpillar

into a corner crept,

Spun around himself a blanket,

Then for a long time slept.

Roly-poly caterpillar

Wakening by and by.

Found himself with beautiful wings,

Changed to a butterfly.

Caterpillar, Frog, Duck

How does a caterpillar go?

Dear me, does anybody know?

How does a caterpillar go?

On a cabbage leaf the whole day long.

How does a little froggie go?

Dear me, does anybody know?

How does a little froggie go?

By a lily pond the whole day long.

How does a fluffy duckling go?

Dear me, does anybody know?

How does a fluffy duckling go?

A-searching worms the whole day long.

(Make suitable actions for each animal.)

The Fuzzy Wuzzy Caterpillar

Fuzzy, wuzzy caterpillar crawling on the ground,

Fuzzy, wuzzy caterpillar never makes a sound (shhhhhh)

Soon you will be sleeping, softly lullaby

Then when you awaken you will be a butterfly.

Bye bye!
